Tomlinson Wins 2025 ORBA Green Leadership and Sustainability Award
Tomlinson Group of Companies is proud to announce that we have been awarded the 2025 ORBA Green Leadership and Sustainability Award for our groundbreaking Sustainable Asphalt Production initiative, marking our fourth time receiving this award.
In response to growing demand for sustainable infrastructure, Tomlinson has advanced a new approach to low-carbon asphalt manufacturing by integrating Harvest Green’s BioPCP™ pyrolysis system into our Asphalt Plant in Ottawa. By converting construction demolition wood waste from our Waste Recovery Centre into a clean, renewable heat source, we fully displaced natural gas during hot-mix asphalt production.

Our project achieved significant, measurable environmental benefits, including:
- 3% reduction in cradle-to-gate carbon emissions
- 4 kg CO2e saved per tonne of asphalt produced
- 124% reduction in plant-operation emissions when avoided landfill methane is included
- Over 1,000 tonnes of CO2e avoided annually through fossil-fuel displacement and waste diversion
The first renewable-energy asphalt was successfully produced and laid on September 8, 2025, confirming its quality, constructability, and strong field performance.

This project demonstrates how circular economy principles can reshape traditional infrastructure practices. By leveraging our own waste streams, we have transformed one of the most energy-intensive roadbuilding processes into a low-carbon, renewable-energy solution without compromising performance or quality. Demonstrating a scalable model capable of influencing the broader industry.
Winning this award reinforces Tomlinson’s ongoing commitment to sustainable innovation and operational excellence. This achievement reflects the collaboration and expertise of our teams, whose shared dedication continues to turn ambitious goals into measurable results.
